History: Goldwork has been used extensively over the centuries on ecclesiastical vestments, as well as on military uniforms, flags and banners. During the late 12th and mid 14th centuries the artisans of England produced particularly excellent embroidered work using silk and gold threads. This period was known as Opus Anglicanum.
Description: This Beginner’s Goldwork class will run on Saturday 21st January from 10am – 4pm and costs £50 excluding materials.
Only 10 spaces are available to ensure each student gets lots of attention. You will be taught how to apply padding using felt, when to wax your thread, how to use and couch different types of gold metal thread and how to use cutwork. Intermediate level students are also welcome to further their knowledge an try new stitches.
There will be a break for lunch at 12.30pm. Tea and coffee are included in the class price. Please bring a packed lunch. Alternatively there are cafes nearby in which to have lunch.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn a traditional hand embroidery technique in the lovely town of Sherborne.
Equipment: You will need:
Embroidery hoop/ring frame, minimum 20cm diameter (ideally hands free)
Fine ended tweezers
Needle threader (optional)
The tutor will provide a kit comprising calico backing fabric, top fabric to be embroidered, hand transferred design, full instructions, stitch diagram, all necessary gold metal threads, yellow craft felt, sewing thread, beeswax and needles. Depending on whether you choose to embroider the Dog Rose or the Swirls design, the cost for this is £30 and £27 respectively, payable on the day by cash or cheque.
If you would prefer not to purchase a kit, please bring a design to work, fabric, an embroidery needle, a chenille needle and a selection of metal threads (Japanese gold thread, gilt pearl purl, gilt bright check purl, gilt twist).
Spare fabrics, gold metal threads, sewing thread, craft felt, beeswaxand needles will be available to purchase on the day if required.
If you would like to purchase a hands free seat frame from the tutor, please mention this when booking (or no later than a week prior to the class). The cost for this is £25.
